Although the poems are in French, a few of them such as "Being Beauteous" have English titles, a reflection of his residence in London. These depicted a surrealistic world of dreams and subconscious thoughts. During this volatile period, perhaps influenced by his emotional stress, Rimbaud wrote his visionary, brilliant and gaudy prose poems which would later be collected in Les Illuminations. Rimbaud's cruel disposition and insults finally took its toll on Verlaine. Verlaine abandoned his wife Mathilde, and the 2 poets travelled throughout Europe together, and they lived in London for a time. Verlaine and Rimbaud formed a passionate relationship which included absinthe and hashish, love and cruelty, inspiration and antagonism, arguments and reconciliations. His caustic remarks and rude habits eventually alienated almost everyone except Verlaine. Unfortunately Rimbaud seemed determined to provoke and insult everyone. Verlaine introduced Rimbaud to many of the great poets and authors of Paris, who concurred that Rimbaud was indeed a youthful genius. Whereas Mathilde Verlaine was disgusted by Rimbaud's arrogant and provocative demeanor, Paul Verlaine recognized the teenaged genius. The Verlaines were surprised by the dirty, surly, young Rimbaud. Verlaine was impressed by the brilliance of these poems and invited Rimbaud to visit him in Paris. Many of Verlaine's poems were later set to music by composers such as Claude Debussy and Gabriel Fauré. Verlaine (1844-1896) was a symbolist poet whose works showed a subtle, tender melancholy. Rimbaud felt that a poet must become a seer by a complete and rational disordering of all the senses.įinally in 1871 at age 17 Rimbaud sent some of his poetry to Paul Verlaine, the French poet he admired most. He studied alchemy and the occult, and formulated his beliefs in two letters which became known as Lettres du voyant (Letters of the Seer). He continued to write poetry but was unable to publish them or find recognition. During these weeks of freedom, as well as hunger and danger, he wrote several poems which celebrated the intense joys of life and liberty. Two months later, he disappeared again and wandered throughout France and Belgium behind the invading Prussian armies. Within a few days he was arrested for travelling without a train ticket and returned to Charleville. Rimbaud ran away to Paris to pursue his ideals of poetic beauty and greatness. He freed himself from his constraints as an obedient, studious schoolboy and became a violently rebellious adolescent. This national upheaval coincided with Rimbaud's personal upheavals. France would be defeated by the end of the year. His formal education ended with the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in July 1870. Rimbaud began to write poetry of his own by age 8, and published his first poem by age 16. His teacher Georges Izambard introduced him to great literature, and he immersed himself in poetry. Driven by his mother, Arthur Rimbaud was a brilliant hard-working child who was small and shy, but won high marks in school. Despite their poverty she managed to move her family from the worst to the best part of town. Vitalie raised their 4 children alone and she sought to improve their station in life. Frédéric Rimbaud was a soldier who was often absent and who abandoned his family when Arthur was 6. He died in Marseilles, France at age 37.Īrthur Rimbaud was born 20 October 1854 in Charleville in northeast France, the son of Frédéric and Vitalie Rimbaud. Afterward he abandoned writing, travelled extensively, and finally settled in Egypt and Ethiopia as a trader, merchant and arms dealer. Perhaps most amazing was that Rimbaud wrote almost all of his poetry in a brief but intensely brilliant few years between the ages of 16 and 19. His most famous work was his last, Un Saison en Enfer (A Season in Hell) published in 1873. His visionary prose poems contained in Les Illuminations of 1872 depicted a surrealistic world of dreams and subconscious thoughts. One of the few exceptions was Les Illuminations, to texts by French poet Arthur Rimbaud.Īrthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) wrote some of the most extraordinary poetry in the French language. Benjamin Britten wrote almost all of his vocal music to texts in English. Here's one more poet with a musical connection, from one of my poetry discussions.

If any part of this unit fails, it is quickly and easily replaceable. Scaffolding is a temporary, and sometimes moveable, fabrication used by workers throughout the construction industry and associated trades. Next we made them repairable by making the entire unit modular, and making replacements available for every piece. Iron maidens are turned into weird, ghost-like floaters who can phase in an out. New enemy types keep getting thrown at you the entire campaign, including a send up to the parasite in a weird dog monster with an enemy spawning teleporter on its back. Every enemy is unique and memorable in design and ability, a huge improvement over Quake II. The berserker now has a nasty electric attack and comes at you like a freight train, and the new brawlers are weird looking tech gorillas with rage modes. You really feel like you’re in the trenches, and the Strogg are made up in more intimidating forms. You can even ask medics and techies to heal and repair your armor. The moody DOOM 3 lighting and comm chatter make for an engaging experience, as do the addition of bot controlled NPC allies. The campaign feels like a proper story and adventure, even managing to outdo DOOM 3 in that respect by throwing out audio logs for live characters for most of the stretch. There’s also a brilliant and downright gnarly scene halfway through the game that flips the narrative a bit, probably the game’s most infamous moment and lasting legacy for very good reason. Strauss sticks out in particular, a seemingly cowardly and egotistical tech who proves to be your closest ally and a survivor who helps create the final master plan to win the day. The marines are characterized about how you expect and all look very similar due to how chunky models in id Tech 4 tend to look, but you get the occasional surprise. The narrative bones of Quake II are fleshed out here, with characters and arcs abound. Your guy, Kane, has to help the Rhino Squad and other marines topside take down the Strogg infrastructure and destroy the nexus core, a sort of hivemind that commands their armies. It takes place just after Bitterman destroyed the “Big Gun,” the invasion of the Strogg home planet starting up in force. Of that era, this is probably the best of the bunch, and the most fitting representation of the Quake II-verse. The issue is less that Quake 4 is bad, far from it, but very different from both the classic id Software style and their fleshed out modern style, the awkward teen years where they couldn’t decide between atmosphere and gameplay. It was id Software trying harder to get into the growing console market, though it’s hard to say if the sluggish nature of Quake 4 was due to trying to copy the Halo formula a bit for a game easier to play with joysticks, or because of the DOOM 3 similarities. It was also an Xbox 360 launch title, and that port did indeed suffer from some choppy frames and slow down. Raven’s take on the series was co-developed alongside the tad sluggish DOOM 3, which people were mixed on and still are to this day, with a somewhat similar design style. It isn’t really remembered all that well, but that’s not too surprising with the period it released. Quake 4 was the last game with a proper single player campaign in the franchise, and the game that perfectly defined the gory, biopunk obsessed menace of the Strogg. they immediatly decide the game is broken due to fact their computer can play a completely different game and it does not crash or whatever when the issue could be solved with a simple GPU driver update or hell just clean the dust out from CPU and GPU fan. I think some people assume that because technology is so advanced these days that certain things will immediatly work in a way that they assume it will work.Īnother example of a silly reason some people dismiss games and give bad review over something that is highly likely they can fix(as long as they meet required specs) is when a game crashes/freezes ect. Suppose everyones spoiled by automation and everything being done for them now. I grew up having to do it myself when it came to stuff like this. Besides nothing is stopping them from just playing online directly via steam and a offical servers right? Seltorexant affected core symptoms of depression in the absence of overt changes in the hypnogram in contrast, diphenhydramine was not efficacious. Treatment with seltorexant was associated with mild, self-limiting adverse drug reactions. Compared to placebo, the antidepressant efficacy of seltorexant coincided with an overall increase in (left posterior) EEG power and a relative increase in delta- and decrease in theta-, alpha- and beta power during stage 2 sleep. Ten days of treatment with seltorexant (and not diphenhydramine) resulted in a significant improvement of core depressive symptoms compared to placebo the antidepressant efficacy of seltorexant was maintained with continued treatment up to 28 days. At baseline the severity of depressive symptoms correlated with sleep efficiency (SE), wake after sleep onset (WASO), duration of stage 2 sleep, and ruminations. To investigate the safety and tolerability of seltorexant, vital signs, suicidal ideation and adverse events were monitored. Effects on sleep were evaluated by polysomnography and by the Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire (LSEQ). Symptoms of depression were rated using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS 17). 47 MDD patients with a total Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS) score of ≥30 at screening were included in a randomized, double-blind, diphenhydramine-, and placebo-controlled multicentre study. In this study, the effects of night-time arousal suppression on depressive symptoms were investigated. Seltorexant (JNJ-42847922/MIN-202) is a selective antagonist of the human orexin-2 receptor (OX2R) that may normalize excessive arousal and thereby attenuate depressive symptoms. Excessive arousal has a role in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). In time, inhabitants learned how to farm the land profitably. Woodside was settled by farmers in the early 18th century. The vicinity came to be called Snake Woods and one source maintains that "during New York’s colonial period, the area was known as 'suicide’s paradise,' as it was largely snake-infested swamps and wolf-ridden woodlands." One of the oldest recorded locations in Woodside was called Rattlesnake Spring on the property of a Captain Bryan Newton. This swamp was not the only place where settlers might fear for the safety of their livestock, and even themselves. Its Native American inhabitants called it a place of "bad waters" and it was known to early European settlers as a place of "marshes, muddy flats and bogs," where "wooded swamps" and "flaggy pools" were fed by flowing springs." Until drained in the nineteenth century, one of these wet woodlands was called Wolf Swamp after the predators that infested it. The "Great Chestnut Tree" was actually located on the west side of the road where it is shown.įor two centuries following the arrival of settlers from England and the Netherlands, the area where the village of Woodside would be established was sparsely populated. Woodside's northern boundary is approximately the top border of the map. This map shows the area that would become Woodside, bounded in the west by Middletown and Dutch Kills (shown as "Kills" in the detail), in the south by English Kills and Maspeth, and in the east by the Village of Newtown (shown as "Vill" in the detail). Politically, Woodside is represented by the New York City Council's 22nd and 26th Districts. It is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 108th Precinct. Woodside is located in Queens Community District 2 and its ZIP Code is 11377. It is also home to some of the city's most popular Thai, Filipino, and South American eateries. Reflecting its longtime diverse cuisines, the neighborhood is filled with many cultural restaurants and pubs. South Asians and Latinos have also moved to Woodside in recent years. In the early 1990s, many Asian American families include a large Filipino community moved into the area, and as a result the current population is 30% Asian American. However, with large-scale residential development in the 1860s, Woodside became the largest Irish American community in Queens, being approximately 80% Irish by the 1930s and maintaining a strong Irish culture today. The adjacent area of Winfield was largely incorporated into the post office serving Woodside and as a consequence Winfield lost much of its identity distinct from Woodside. In the 19th century the area was part of the Town of Newtown (now Elmhurst). Some areas are widely residential and very quiet, while other parts, especially the ones around Roosevelt Avenue, are busier. It is bordered on the south by Maspeth, on the north by Astoria, on the west by Sunnyside, and on the east by Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and East Elmhurst. Woodside is a residential and commercial neighborhood in the western portion of the borough of Queens in New York City. |
